Communications & Public Affairs

The Office of Communications & Public Affairs serves UC Hastings by leading the schoolwide communications program and assisting students, faculty and staff with publicity of events and newsworthy initiatives.

Communications & Public Affairs also provides guidance on working with campus and mainstream news media and serves as the central repository for communications materials, including photographs and templates, produced on behalf of UC Hastings.

We ask for your understanding that, as a small department, we must leverage our resources in ways in which they have the greatest impact.

Resources

Announcements for External Audiences

The focus of this office is primarily on external communications, not internal communications or communications between departments and the constituencies they serve (e.g., the Admissions Office and applicants, the Alumni Center and alumni, the Student Services Office and students, etc.).

  • Events: Please use the UC Hastings Event Publicity Form to provide us with all of the pertinent information—the “who, what, where, when and why”—and all contact information necessary for the announcement.
  • Professional Accomplishments: Please report your professional accomplishments and scholarship to the following email address:  facultyachievements@uchastings.edu.
  • “In the News”: If you have been cited in the news, or find other items regarding UC Hastings faculty, staff, students or alumni you feel may be worthy of sharing with the broader community, please email communications@uchastings.edu.

How Will Your Announcement Be Publicized?

Communications & Public Affairs will determine how/whether to publicize your announcement, including the type of channel most appropriate – such as an announcement on our website, a media advisory, social media, an item in our Alumni Magazine or, for the biggest stories, a press release.

Promoting Your Expertise

  • If there is an issue in the news for which you might serve as an expert, please advise us and we will work with you to alert the appropriate media outlets.
  • We can help you arrange and prepare for interviews, including tips on delivery for broadcast.
  • Please tell us about your most noteworthy accomplishments or if you are quoted in the media.
  • When a member of the media contacts us seeking an expert in your area, we will coordinate by contacting you via email, office phone or cell phone to inquire about your availability.

Publications

  • Our office is a resource for you to ensure a consistent look and feel to all publications and templates, in keeping with the UC Hastings Visual Identity Manual.
  • Should the design requirements in the Identity Manual not meet your needs, our office can work with you to recommend designers and develop new designs that we determine are sufficiently consistent with the manual.
  • The Alumni Magazine is the only publication in the Communications budget. Other publications, though not funded by our office, may be assigned to us depending on the needs of the college.

Op-Ed Articles (Faculty & Program Staff)

  • We can assist you in editing and placing op-ed articles based on scholarly research or programs.
